Melas / Martinos Back

Melas / Martinos is a gallery located in the heart of Monastiraki, overlooking the ruins of the ancient Agora and the Parthenon. The building was constructed in the 1930's and later underwent a design intervention by the famous Takis Zenetos in the 1960's. The ground floor houses martinos antique shop while the upper 3 floors, which served as storage for the antique shop, with windows closed, have been redesigned and open to the public and to the magnificent view of the Parthenon. The main goal of the architect was to design a functional layout for the contemporary needs of a gallery while preserving the characteristics of the 1930's and 1960's. The idea was to make the architect's presence as little noticeable as possible while opening up the space to the vibrant light and views of the area. If you walk in and you can't tell what's new and what's old then the architect has succeeded!
