For the Atomists of Antiquity, such as Epicurus and Lucretius, all of reality is composed of random (stochastic) and turbulent flows of atoms. This current state of being in motion, Epicurus tells us, is not original, but is the result of a sudden immanent swerve (τύχη) which disrupted the once laminar flow of atomic strata. The rest, as they say, is history—but not just any history, it is our history. And this collective history requires, at least every now and again, such moments of intervention, designed or otherwise.
